A summertime south swell hit San Diego beaches and decided to swim out at one of my favorite sand bars to do some water photos of some rippers like Ralph West, Dusty Hornback, and Jordan Schweller.
The excitement of summertime swells hitting the beaches of San Diego is something that surfers and ocean enthusiasts look forward to all year long. And on July 22nd, 2018, I was lucky enough to witness one of these swells firsthand while doing some water photography.
We swam out to one of my favorite sand bars, I felt the warm water enveloping me and the anticipation building inside of me. The waves were consistent, with sets coming in at waist to shoulder high, and the conditions were clean and inviting. I knew that this was going to be a great day for capturing some amazing shots of the surfers.

Pulling up my camera to begin snapping away as Ralph West, Dusty Hornback, and Jordan Schweller tore up the waves. It is not easy to surf with a water photographer snapping away photos. It takes great skill and understanding of how to pinpoint on the wave where you want to start your maneuvers and where they will end up.
The day went on and I was struck by the camaraderie among the surfers in the water. They cheered each other on, offered tips and advice, and laughed together as they rode the waves. It was a reminder of the sense of community that can be found in the surfing world, and it was heartwarming to witness.
As the session came to a close, I reluctantly made my way back to shore, feeling invigorated and inspired by the day’s events. I knew that I had captured some amazing shots, but more than that, I had been a part of something special. A community of surfers, coming together to enjoy the beauty and power of the ocean.
In the end, that’s what it’s all about. Not just the individual act of surfing or taking photos, but the sense of connection and community that can be found in the water. And on that day, as the summertime south swell hit the San Diego beaches, I was reminded of that in the most beautiful way possible.
