We decided to take a boat out to some of the surf breaks in the middle of nowhere on Sunset Cliffs. We had quite an adventure with little surfing involved. Due to the heavy kelp we couldn’t park the boat close, and had to park it about quarter to half mile out in the ocean then swim to the inside.

On January 18th, 2018, we learned this lesson the hard way. We had heard that there was a decent sized swell in the ocean, so we decided to take a boat out to some of the surf breaks in the middle of nowhere on Sunset Cliffs. We were excited to catch some waves and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Little did we know that we were in for quite an adventure.

As we approached the area where we planned to surf, we noticed that there was a heavy kelp forest in the water. This made it difficult for us to park the boat close to the surf break, so we had to park it about a quarter to half mile out in the ocean. We didn’t think it would be a big deal, so we jumped out of the boat and started swimming towards the inside.

Unfortunately, the surf was lack-luster and we didn’t catch many waves. We were starting to get bored and decided to head back to the boat. That’s when things started to get a bit tricky.

As we were swimming back out to the boat, we hit some serious currents. We were getting pulled in all directions and it was difficult to stay together as a group. We were starting to get tired and worried about making it back to the boat safely.

To make matters worse, a fog bank had started to roll in and was surrounding the boat. We worried we wouldn’t see it clearly and it was difficult to gauge our distance from it. Eventually, we made it back to the boat, but it was a close call.

This experience taught us a valuable lesson about the ocean and the importance of being prepared. It’s important to check the conditions before heading out and to have the proper equipment and knowledge to handle any situation that may arise. We were lucky this time, but we won’t make the same mistake twice.
