Day 3 of the swell, January 14th, 2016, was no exception. While the overall size of the waves had dropped slightly from the previous day, there were still plenty of “barreling bombs” rolling in. For those unfamiliar with the term, a “barrel” or “tube” is a wave that is hollow and forms a tunnel as it breaks. For surfers, riding inside the barrel is the ultimate goal, and it requires skill and courage to do so.
On this day, surfers like Peter Lochtefeld, Keone Betanzos, Henry Hunt, and many others were out in the water, charging these powerful waves. These surfers are well-known in the area and are respected for their talent and experience. Watching them ride these waves was truly awe-inspiring.
Surfing can be a dangerous sport, especially when waves are this big. But for these surfers, it’s a passion and a way of life. They know the risks and are willing to take them in order to experience the thrill of riding these massive waves.
As spectators, we can only imagine what it must feel like to ride a wave like this. But we can appreciate the beauty and power of nature, and the skill and bravery of these surfers. It’s moments like this that remind us of the magic of surfing and why it continues to captivate us year after year.
In conclusion, the January 2016 winter swell in La Jolla and San Diego was an unforgettable experience for surfers and spectators alike. Day 3 brought some slightly smaller waves, but they were still impressive and drew out some of the area’s best surfers. We can only hope to witness such a spectacle again in the future.
