On December 8, 2020, San Diego saw an impressive swell, sending bomb sets to La Jolla Reefs. The majority of surf spots were closed out, but a select few in La Jolla, Encinitas, and Sunset Cliffs were still rideable.

Only a brave few ventured out, with offshore winds and waves ranging from 10-12 feet, occasionally spiking at 15-18 feet. Among them was Chris Oleata, a local big wave surfer, taking on some of the day’s largest waves.

Days like these call for surfboards of 7 feet or more to handle the immense surf. Extra paddle power is crucial for navigating through the pounding waves and dropping into those massive faces. These are experiences reserved for the most advanced surfers. The beginners and intermediates would risk their safety and that of others, including San Diego’s first responders and lifeguards.

San Diego’s coastline offers breathtaking opportunities for surfing, but it’s essential to respect the ocean’s power and know your limits, especially on days when nature truly shows its force.
