It was a day that will go down in the memory books for many surfers along the California coast. On January 5th, 2023, a massive winter swell rolled in, bringing with it towering waves and the promise of some epic surf sessions.
As the swell began to fill in, many surfers headed to their usual spots, hoping to catch some of the biggest waves of the year. However, with most of the popular surf breaks along the coast maxed out, a group of San Diego rippers decided to head up the coast in search of a more secluded spot.
After hours of driving and scouring the coastline, they finally stumbled upon a rare sand bar that was catching the waves just right. It was a novelty wave, wrapping around into the sand bar and offering up some of the best rides of the day.

The San Diego crew wasted no time in getting out into the water and taking advantage of this incredible opportunity. Surfers like Johnny Noris, Zeke, Keone Betanzos, and Nick Jiampa all caught some of these great novelty waves, pushing themselves to their limits and experiencing the thrill of riding waves that few others had ever ridden before.
For these surfers, it was a reminder of why they love the sport so much. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of catching a wave, especially one that is as rare and special as the ones they caught on that unforgettable day.
Of course, not every surfer was lucky enough to score such great waves on January 5th. But for those who did, it was an experience they’ll never forget. And even for those who didn’t, the sheer power and majesty of the ocean on display that day was a reminder of just how incredible this sport can be.
As surfers, we know that not every day on the water will be like January 5th, 2023. But it’s moments like these that keep us coming back, pushing ourselves to become better, and chasing that feeling of pure stoke that only surfing can bring. Here’s hoping that we all have a chance to experience something like this someday.
