The Rob Machado Foundation set up an information and water refill booth at Camp Shred 2023. We caught up with legendary professional surfer, Rob Machado, to get some background information about his charity and what was the catalyst.
As the surf community gathered at the annual Camp Shred event in 2023, they were met with a new addition to the festival grounds: an information and water refill booth set up by the Rob Machado Foundation. The foundation, which focuses on improving access to clean water and educational opportunities for young people, is the brainchild of none other than professional surfer and legend, Rob Machado.
In a recent interview, Machado shared that the inspiration for the foundation came from his own travels to surf destinations around the world. He noticed that in many of these places, access to clean water was a significant challenge for local communities, particularly for young people. “It just didn’t make sense to me that we have all these resources and technologies available, yet so many people are still struggling just to access something as basic as clean water,” he said.

Driven by a desire to make a positive impact on these communities, Machado founded the Rob Machado Foundation in 2004. Since then, the organization has worked on a number of projects to provide access to clean water and educational opportunities to young people around the world. Some of their most notable initiatives include installing water filtration systems in schools and community centers in Fiji, as well as supporting the construction of new classrooms and educational facilities in areas with limited access to education.
At Camp Shred 2023, the foundation’s booth was a hub of activity, with festival-goers stopping by to learn more about the organization and its initiatives. Along with providing information about the foundation, the booth also offered free water refills to attendees, in an effort to reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles at the event. It’s a small but impactful step towards the foundation’s larger goal of promoting sustainable practices and reducing waste.
As a professional surfer, Machado knows firsthand the importance of taking care of our oceans and preserving natural resources for future generations. Through the Rob Machado Foundation, he’s working to extend that same care and concern to communities around the world. “It’s about creating a ripple effect of positive change,” he says. “If we can make a difference in one community, that impact can spread and grow over time.”
The Rob Machado Foundation’s presence at Camp Shred 2023 is a reminder that, even in the midst of a festival celebrating surf culture, there are always opportunities to give back and make a difference. With initiatives like their water refill station, the foundation is showing that small actions can add up to significant change – and inspiring others to get involved in making a positive impact on the world.
