Luau Stories : Jon Roseman – Surfing For a Cure

Jon Roseman, a founder of Tavarua Resort in Fiji, shared with us why the Luau & Legends of Surfing Invitational and raising money for the Moores Cancer Center is so important. This is part of a video series called Luau Stories. Roseman informed us how a Fijian tribal elder named Chief Druku suffered from Cancer. He was flown from Fiji to San Diego for treatment at the Moores Cancer Center. The exceptional team at Moores was able to treat and extend his life for several years before succumbing to the disease.

For over 20 years every August the contest and luau is held at Scripps Pier along the La Jolla Shores. This is the largest surfing charity event in the world having raised over 10 Million for the Moores Cancer Center.

The UCSD Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational is an annual event that brings together the vibrant culture of Hawaii and the sport of surfing to the shores of San Diego. Hosted by UC San Diego, this event is a celebration of the deep-rooted connection between Hawaii and the world of surfing. Participants and guests are treated to a day filled with thrilling surf competitions. As well as traditional Hawaiian music and dance performances, and a mouthwatering luau feast.

The highlight of the event is the Legends of Surfing Invitational contest. This event features some of the most renowned surfers from Hawaii, California, and around the world. These surfing legends showcase their skills on the waves while raising funds for cancer research at the Moores Cancer Center at UCSD. The event pays homage to the rich history of surfing and also contributes to an important cause. It offers a perfect blend of surf culture, philanthropy, and Hawaiian spirit.
