We met up with shaper, Jason Bennett, from Chemistry Surfboards at the annual Camp Shred event in San Diego to discuss his latest model “The Zen 4.1”. Jason went into the technical aspects of designing this latest model and upgrade to their highly popular Zen 4.0 model.

When it comes to surfboards, the design and construction process is key to unlocking the perfect ride. The shaper behind Chemistry Surfboards, Jason Bennett, knows this all too well. At the annual Camp Shred event in San Diego, we had the opportunity to catch up with him and learn about his latest model: The Zen 4.1.

The Zen 4.0 was already a highly popular model, so we were eager to hear how Bennett had upgraded it with the Zen 4.1. According to him, the main focus was to improve the board’s performance in smaller, weaker waves.

To achieve this, Bennett started by making the board slightly wider and shorter than the 4.0 model, with a round tail for added maneuverability. He also added a slight concave to the bottom of the board, which allows for quicker water displacement and more speed in smaller waves.

One of the unique features of the Zen 4.1 is the use of Varial Foam in the construction process. Varial Foam is a high-density foam that is much more responsive and durable than traditional polyurethane foam. This allows for a more consistent flex pattern and a longer lifespan for the board.

In addition to the Varial Foam, Bennett used a carbon fiber stringer to add even more strength and responsiveness to the board. The stringer also helps to maintain the board’s shape over time, ensuring that it performs consistently throughout its lifespan.

Overall, the Zen 4.1 is a board that is designed to excel in smaller, weaker waves. Its wider shape and concave bottom allow for more speed and maneuverability, while the use of Varial Foam and a carbon fiber stringer ensure that the board is both durable and responsive.

For those looking to upgrade their surfboard or try something new, the Zen 4.1 is definitely worth considering. With its advanced construction techniques and focus on performance, it’s a board that is sure to take your surfing to the next level.
