Wingnut, the legendary longboarder featured in the Endless Summer II movie, recently shared his thoughts on why the Luau & Legends of Surfing Invitational, which raises money for the Moores Cancer Center, is so important to him. This event, which has been held annually for over 20 years at Scripps Pier along the La Jolla Shores, is the largest surfing charity event in the world, having raised over $10 million for cancer research.
In a video series called Luau Stories, Wingnut shared his personal connection to the event and the cause it supports. He explained that he lost his father to cancer when he was just 18 years old, and that experience has stayed with him throughout his life. Wingnut is now a cancer survivor himself, having battled the disease in 2015.
For Wingnut, the Luau & Legends of Surfing Invitational is not just a chance to raise money for cancer research. It’s also an opportunity to honor those who have been affected by cancer. Wingnut spoke about how the event brings together the surfing community to support a common cause. Especially how inspiring it is to see so many people come together to make a difference.
